Tepezza for thyroid eye disease: a new hope
Living with thyroid eye disease (TED) can be painful and distressing. Bulging eyes, double vision and changes in appearance can affect not only your vision but also your confidence and quality of life. At London Oculoplastics, we understand how deeply TED impacts everyday activities – from reading and driving to simply feeling comfortable in social situations.
Tepezza (teprotumumab) offers new hope. It is the first and only approved targeted therapy for thyroid eye disease, designed to reduce inflammation, restore comfort and improve the appearance of the eyes – often without the need for surgery.
London Oculoplastics is among the first clinics in the UK to offer this pioneering treatment, led by Mr Jimmy Uddin – internationally recognised TED specialist and senior consultant ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital. As we age, the delicate skin around the eyes can loosen and sag. This may make the eyes look tired or heavy. In many cases, the eyelids can begin to obstruct vision. For others, medical conditions such as thyroid eye disease (TED), facial palsy (weakness of facial muscles) or stroke can affect eyelid position and symmetry. These changes can affect confidence, comfort and the ability to carry out daily activities such as reading and driving.
Blepharoplasty offers an effective way to restore eyelid function, improve vision and create a more refreshed and natural appearance. It’s not only a cosmetic procedure – many people seek blepharoplasty to correct medical problems that interfere with their sight or eyelid movement.
At London Oculoplastics, all eyelid surgery is carried out by Mr Jimmy Uddin, internationally recognised senior consultant ophthalmologist and oculoplastic surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital. With more than 25 years of experience in functional and reconstructive eyelid surgery, he provides tailored treatment that prioritises both vision and appearance.
What is Tepezza?
Tepezza (teprotumumab) is a prescription medication used to treat moderate to severe thyroid eye disease in adults.
While approved in the United States to treat TED, Tepezza is not yet widely available in Europe or the UK, and is currently unavailable on the NHS.
You can access Tepezza privately at London Oculoplastics. We’re proud to be one of the first centres to be able to provide this pioneering treatment.
Under the expert care of Mr Jimmy Uddin – internationally renowned, senior consultant ophthalmologist and surgeon at the world-famous Moorfields Eye Hospital – you can benefit from expert guidance from a doctor who has been directly involved in clinical trials for Tepezza.
How does Tepezza work?
Tepezza works by calming the overactive immune response that causes TED and can reverse some anatomical changes associated with TED. It’s part of a modern group of medicines called ‘biologics’, which are designed to target the parts of the body’s immune system that cause the disease.
Thyroid eye disease is an autoimmune condition that affects the eyes and the tissues around them. It is often linked to thyroid disorders, most commonly an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), although it can also affect people with normal thyroid function.
In TED, the immune system becomes overactive and mistakenly targets the muscles, fat and soft tissue around the eyes. This causes inflammation and swelling, which can change both the way the eyes feel and the way they look.
Tepezza helps to reduce swelling and pressure around the eyes. It’s been shown to make large muscles associated with TED smaller and reduce the fat volume. It can also reduce eye bulging, improve double vision and ease other symptoms of TED, helping you feel more comfortable and confident.
The treatment is given as an intravenous (IV) infusion, which means the medicine is delivered into a vein in your arm. This is done once every three weeks, for eight sessions.
Many patients begin to notice improvements as the treatment course progresses.
The benefits of Tepezza
Clinical studies have shown that Tepezza can make a meaningful difference for people living with TED.
Patients who have received treatment often report improvements in both how their eyes feel and how they look. Importantly, several international clinical trials show promising results for Tepezza’s effectiveness and safety as a treatment.
Mr Jimmy Uddin has been directly involved in several of these key clinical trials, including one of the early landmark studies being carried out at Moorfields Eye Hospital. His expertise and first-hand experience with the research and clinical trials of Tepezza mean that patients at London Oculoplastics are in trusted, highly knowledgeable hands.
The key benefits of Tepezza include:
- Reducing bulging eyes (proptosis) – Tepezza can help the eyes sit back more naturally in their sockets, easing pressure and improving appearance
- Improving double vision – many patients notice clearer, more comfortable vision as swelling around the eye muscles settles
- Reducing inflammation and swelling – by calming the immune response that drives TED, Tepezza helps to relieve redness, puffiness and discomfort
- Improving quality of life and appearance – with eyes that look and feel better, many patients regain confidence and comfort in daily life
- Delaying or avoiding surgery – for some people, Tepezza provides such good results that complex eye surgery may not be needed at all, or can be safely delayed
- Reversing some of the clinical, radiological and anatomical changes associated with TED, particularly reducing enlargement of the eye muscles and excess orbital fat
Tepezza offers patients a proven non-surgical treatment for bulging eyes and other TED symptoms, helping restore comfort and appearance without the need for complex operations.
Before and after Tepezza treatment
As treatment with Tepezza progresses, many people begin to see real changes. Here you will be able to see examples of before and after Tepezza treatment, showing the real-life difference it can make for people with TED.
Every patient’s journey is unique, but these stories show how Tepezza can help restore both comfort and confidence without the need for surgery.
Who is suitable for Tepezza?
Tepezza may be an option for people with active, moderate to severe TED. This is the stage when the eyes are still inflamed and changing, and treatment can have the greatest effect.
It may be particularly suitable for:
- Patients with active TED – those experiencing symptoms such as bulging eyes, swelling, pain or double vision
- People looking for alternatives to surgery – Tepezza can sometimes reduce or delay the need for complex eye operations
- Patients referred by endocrinologists or ophthalmologists – many people are directed to Tepezza after being under the care of a thyroid or eye specialist
Every patient’s situation is different, so an in-depth consultation with a TED specialist is the best way to understand whether Tepezza is the right treatment for you.
Treatment process with London Oculoplastics
At London Oculoplastics, your Tepezza journey begins with a thorough consultation with Mr Uddin, who will assess your symptoms, eye health and medical history.
Because TED is closely linked with thyroid function, we also work in collaboration with your endocrinologist to ensure your thyroid is well-controlled before and during treatment.
Tepezza is given as a series of eight IV infusions over around 21 weeks, usually one every three weeks. Each stage of the process is explained clearly so you know what to expect.
Throughout the course, your progress is carefully monitored, with regular reviews to check how well your eyes are responding and to make sure you feel fully supported.
